Solar Panel Cleaning

Rain doesn't clean your panels.

Near the coast, salt carried on the breeze mixes with marine layer moisture and dries into a sticky film on panel glass. That film catches dust, pollen and bird droppings, and it builds faster than it does inland. Rain loosens some dust but mostly moves the rest around. The result is a haze between the sun and your cells, and it rarely goes away on its own.

Panels need a gentle approach. High pressure can damage glass and seals, and harsh chemicals or tap water can leave residue and mineral spots. We clean with deionized, purified water and soft, professional-grade brushes, which lift the film and dry clear without spotting. Home roofs, HOA buildings and commercial rooftop arrays all get the same method.

Know the signs

Signs your panels are due

  • A visible haze across the glass

    What it means
Salt and dust film that rain hasn't removed.
    What we do
A soft brush pass with deionized water, then a spot-free rinse.
  • Bird droppings on the panels

    What it means
Concentrated spots that shade part of a panel.
    What we do
Softened with water and brushed off, without scraping the glass.
  • Panels look dull, not reflective

    What it means
Buildup is sitting between the sun and your cells.
    What we do
A full clean of every panel in the array.
  • Output lower than the same month last year

    What it means
Dirt is one possible cause, especially near the coast.
    What we do
Clean the panels, then compare. If output stays low, it's worth a call to your installer.

How we do it

How we clean solar panels

Deionized water and soft brushes

Tap water carries minerals that dry as spots on glass. Deionized water has those minerals removed, so it rinses clean and dries spot-free. We pair it with soft, professional-grade brushes on a water-fed pole: enough agitation to lift salt film and droppings, gentle enough for the glass. No harsh chemicals, and no pressure washer anywhere near your panels.

  1. 01

    Look over the array

We check access, the roof around the panels, and any heavy spots like droppings before we start.

  2. 02

    Wet and soften

Panels are wetted with deionized water so dried-on salt and droppings soften before any brushing.

  3. 03

    Brush every panel

Soft, professional-grade brushes work across each panel to lift film and grime.

  4. 04

    Spot-free rinse

A final deionized rinse carries everything off. It dries clear, so no water spots are left on the glass.

  5. 05

    Windows come after

On a full exterior visit, solar is cleaned before the windows, so runoff never lands on finished glass.

FAQ

Solar Panel Cleaning: questions, answered.

Something else on your mind? Call or text (949) 371-6307.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Orange County?

Every 6 to 12 months for most homes. Panels near the beach collect salt film faster and usually need the shorter interval. Homes farther inland, with less salt in the air, can often go the full year.

Doesn't rain clean my panels?

Not really. Rain moves loose dust around, but it doesn't remove salt film, bird droppings or sticky buildup, and it can leave residue behind as it dries. A proper clean takes the film off completely.

Can you pressure wash solar panels?

No, and we don't. High pressure can damage the glass, the seals and the frame. We use deionized water and soft brushes, which clean the surface without force or harsh chemicals.

Why deionized water?

Regular tap water carries minerals that are left behind as spots and streaks when it dries. Deionized water has those minerals removed, so it rinses clean and dries clear, leaving nothing on the glass to block light.

Will cleaning improve my output?

If dirt is what's holding the panels back, yes: removing the film lets more sunlight reach the cells. How much depends on how dirty they were. If output stays low after a clean, check with your installer.

Do you clean panels on tile roofs?

Yes. Plenty of Orange County solar sits on clay or concrete tile, and we work carefully around it. Panels can be cleaned on the same visit as a roof wash, right after the roof.
